MY THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed this book and it was such a quick, easy read that I finished it in one day.

You can see in Reagan’s letters to Nancy that he was so in love with her. He constantly mentions how he can’t live without her and that he was a lonely man before he met her. Then you get to see how much she loved him as she thought back to their life together when he wrote the letters.

One of my favorite parts of Reagan’s letters are how many different nicknames he had for Nancy. it was so funny reading nicknames like Nancy Poo, Nancy Poo Pants, and Glamour Puss. Thankfully, Nancy explains where some of the nicknames come from, but not all, making me wonder how the others came about. Every time a new nickname came up, I thought about my husband and me. We also have so many silly nicknames I’ve lost count.

It’s very nice to see another side of Ronald Reagan from the person who knows him best and was with him through all the ups and downs of his life as well as his career. Nancy made it a point that her life was all about Ronald Reagan and making sure he had a conformable home. He always made a point to show her how grateful he was for it and never stopped writing her letters.

Overall, its a very wonderful cute love story of the President and First Lady. Even though people knew how much they loved each other just from seeing them together, it was great to read about them from Nancy’s point of view. After reading this book, I feel even more certain that they are the most in love historical couple.

Hello My Fellow Book Lovers!

It’s been a long time (longer than I want to admit). I took a few years off to do some other things that were really important to me.

I started a non-profit called the Lisa Michelle Memorial Fund. It’s a fund started in honor of my mother and provides scholarships to students who have lost a parent to substance abuse. It’s been a great rewarding experience to provide these scholarships every year.

I also had been promoted at work and took on a very demanding role. It was a lot of work, but I learned so much in the process. Now I’ve found a new job (same company) as an entertainment underwriter. I essentially get to insure commercials, music videos, documentaries, films, and so much more in film/video production. I love my new job and it has much better work life balance.

I also gained two beautiful nieces and became godmother to both of them. They are beautiful, smart, and fun little girls, so I was spending a lot of time with them. Now they have moved to Idaho and I find myself with a lot more time on my hands.

Now that I’ve gained back some free time, I realized how much I missed my book blog and the book lover community. I may not post as much as I did, but I do want to get back to sharing my thoughts on books, sharing new books I’ve found, and find some new ones in the great community of readers.

Saturday Spotlight – Two Across by Jeff Bartsch

It’s always a great feeling when I receive a book in the mail. I get all excited knowing that, when I open it, I will get to immerse myself in another great story. While I have adopted the digital age of reading using my Kindle, I still love the feeling of holding a book in my hands, admiring the cover, and curling up on the couch with only the light of the table lamp beside me (if only I had a fireplace in my apartment).

27 Birthday Goals

Today I turn 27 years old (young) and each year I share a list of goals I have set for myself and an update on my previous year’s goals.

Setting goals is something I live by and I feel that no goal is too small or too big. It’s just about whether you’re willing to work hard to reach them.

First, I’d like to share the goals I have accomplished this year:

Get a new computer (Got an Apple MacBook Air)
Create a scholarship fund for students who have lost a parent from prescription drug addiction (Started the Lisa Michelle Memorial Fund on September 20, 2015. It’s a non-profit that provides scholarships to students who have lost a parent to substance abuse. We are awarding our first $1,000 scholarship to a student who attends Washington State University. Travel (Went to Napa, Calistoga, and Sonoma Valley for our 1st wedding anniversary)
Move up in my career (Started working at a new company this year)
Get a new phone (Finally got a new iPhone!)

Hike to upper Yosemite falls
Read all Mary Higgins Clark books
Get my CPCU (Just finished my first class!)

The Women’s National Book Association – Los Angeles invites you to a specially curated Summer Reading Event at Flintridge Bookstore on the must-read books of the season.

Flintridge Bookstore’s booksellers will present their picks for the most engaging women’s fiction, literary fiction and creative non-fiction titles to add to your to-read lists. Be prepared to take notes and to ask questions!

Recommended titles will be available for purchase, as well as a large stock of adult and children’s books, bookish gifts, greeting cards and reading accessories.

Immediately following the presentation, members are invited to mix ‘n’ mingle at the in-store coffeehouse. The menu consists of light snacks, lunch items and assorted beverages.

Book of the Week | Girl In The Dark by Anna Lyndsey

Today I want to share a book that I’ve been anxiously wanting to read, but I’ve been waiting for it to be physically in my hands.

The first time I saw this book on a shelf I immediately fell in love with the cover which led me to read the description and add it to my reading list. The only problem is that I have no more room on my bookshelf or in our tiny apartment, so how do I choose which book to replace so that I can add this gem to my collection? Thoughts?

Well, my birthday is coming up so maybe I will just treat myself and figure out where to store this in my apartment after I read it. #BookLoverProblems

Light Gets In

It is extraordinarily difficult to black out a room.

First I line the curtains with blackout material, a heavy, plasticky fabric, strange flesh-like magnolia in colour, not actually black. But the light slips in easily, up and over the gap between the rail and the wall, and at the bottom through the loops made by the hanging folds.

So I add a blackout roller blind, inside the window alcove. But the light creeps in around the sides, and shimmies through the slit at the top.

So I tackle the panes themselves. I cut sheets of cooking foil, press them against the glass, tape them to the window frames. But the foil wrinkles and rips, refuses to lie flat. Gaps persist around the edges, pinpricks and tears across the middle. I tape and tape, tape over tape, foil over foil, layer upon layer. Instead of neat sheets of foil tethered by single strips of tape, the thing is becoming wild installation art. But I can’t stop. The light is laughing at me; it is playing deliberate games, lying low to persuade me that I have made an area secure, then as soon as I move on, wriggling through some overlooked wormhole. The day beyond my window is an ocean, pressing and pulsing at my protecting walls, and I must plug a leaky dike perpetually against its power.

At last, I think I may have done enough. I lower the blind on my crazy patchwork of foil, pull the curtains, place a rolled-up towel along the crack at the bottom of the door. I sit quietly on the bed, and wait for my eyes to adjust.

And I have it. Finally I have it. I have blackness.

I lie back inside my box of darkness, the new container for my life. I am overwhelmed with exhaustion and relief.
