PUBLISHER: Brenda & Cobena Books

PUBLICATION DATE: July 3, 2014

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romance

It grew late, and Meredith thanked them for a lovely evening and stood to head home. Shane walked her outside, where she bristled against the cold; it had grown quite chilly since the sun had set.

He followed her to her car and stood beside her at the driver’s side door, his hands in his pockets as he stared down at her.

Meredith said, “Thanks for inviting me to meet your sister, Shane. I had a really nice time. She’s wonderful.” She smiled warmly but wrapped her arms around herself, shivering.

“No problem.”

They passed an awkward moment in silence.

“Well,” Meredith said, looking at her car and then back at Shane, “I’d better go.”

“Okay,” he said. “Hey,” he added suddenly.

“Yes?”

“Is it still too soon to kiss you?”

Meredith felt her heart drop to the ground. Even if it had been too soon, which she finally had begun to feel it wasn’t, his simple question and sincere expression would have changed her mind. She had yet to figure him out, had felt tonight more than ever that they had a long way to go before they understood each other—but she had been more at ease with him tonight regardless, had enjoyed the glimpse into his background and had appreciated his having invited her to see it.

She looked at him, really studying his features, his thick neck and wide cheekbones, sensuously full lips—she had never noticed quite how full they were—and large eyes, his lashes so long as to make his eyes look almost feminine. They were the one soft feature about him. Everything else was almost too masculine, too angular and too powerful.

She did want to kiss him but was afraid to want to. She had promised herself she was not going to fall in love again. She wasn’t truly worried about falling in love with Shane—she sensed that, while they could get along well if they worked at it, they were operating from two very different perspectives. But she didn’t want to confuse herself. Though she didn’t think she’d ever fall in love with Shane, she did worry that she would begin to grow dependent on him, and what then? She didn’t know him well enough to know how loyal he would be, whether he would stay with her through the ups and downs of normal relationships, or whether he would leave her at the first sign of a challenge or at the first flirtatious look from another woman. Standing there, watching him waiting for her response, she knew she was thinking too hard. In her mind she imagined him telling her, It’s just a kiss, Meredith.

She had already decided he could kiss her but hadn’t had the courage to say so. Shane seemed to know this and leaned in toward her. Meredith felt the heat off his body before she felt his lips on hers and was unprepared for but delighted by how his nearness shielded her from the cold of the evening. To her surprise, his lips brushed hers lightly, and nothing more; he did not linger, but pulled away and stared at her, his eyes still serious but also touched by something like tenderness. He smiled then and rubbed her cold arms with his large, rough hands. Instantly she felt warmer, and she returned his gaze starry-eyed.

“I’ll call you,” he said, and removed his hands.

“Okay,” she responded softly, paralyzed.

He took a couple of steps backward, then waved and returned his hands to his pockets. He walked back up toward the house, entered, and closed the door, not waiting for her to drive off, not even waiting for her to step into her car.

“Ah,” Vince exclaimed, leaning back in his seat and rubbing his belly. “I’m stuffed. Thanks for dinner, Wes.”

“It’s my pleasure. I’m glad I had the chance to meet Meredith’s brother. I’ve heard a lot about you.”

“Whatever she’s told you, it’s all true,” Vince said, and everyone laughed. Then they passed a moment or two in silence.

“Well,” Vince said then, “I’m beat. I think I’ll head back and turn in. Are you coming, Merry?”

“Yes, let me just help Wes clean up, and I’ll be right there. You go ahead and get settled.”

Vince and Wes shook hands, and Vince crossed the street toward Meredith’s house.

Wes and Meredith chatted as they cleaned up from dinner. When they were finished, Meredith dried her hands on a towel and looked about the kitchen, pleased.

“That was great, Wes. Thanks so much for entertaining my brother.”

“As I said, it was my pleasure.” He looked at her with a curious expression. “Meredith, I’m going to ask you a question, and I want an honest answer.”

Meredith instantly felt nervous, her heart thumping in her chest. She willed her face not to flush, suspecting she knew what this was about.

“What is it?” she asked, trying to sound calm.

“I need to know if you still have feelings for Nick,” he said. “I’m not blind, Meredith. Whenever he comes up in conversation, you turn red and get all giddy.” Suddenly his eyebrows furrowed. “He doesn’t have anything to do with the fact that you haven’t accepted my proposal, does he?”

“No,” Meredith asserted, meaning it, and grateful that Wes had asked her a question she could answer truthfully. “No, he has nothing to do with that.”

“I don’t mind if you remember him fondly every once in a while, but I won’t be made a fool of, either.”

Meredith wrapped her arms around his waist. “I love you, Wes,” she said, then paused as she fought with herself over what to tell him. “I do sometimes feel burned when I think of him. When he left, there were a lot of unresolved feelings. But I wouldn’t be with you now if I didn’t believe I could have a happy future with you. What happened in the past doesn’t change that.”

He was watching her carefully, trying to pick up on subtle signals. Finally he relaxed. “Okay,” he said. “I guess I can live with that.” He kissed her forehead, then smiled.

“Great,” she said, returning his smile and rubbing his shoulders. “Come on, then. I assume you’re spending the night at my place tonight.”

“You know what, sweetheart,” he said, his fingers sifting through her hair, “I think you should just spend time with your brother tonight. I’ll stay here.”

Meredith looked at him with surprise. “But Vince is going right to sleep.”

“I know, but this way I won’t be in the way.”

“How will you be in the way if he’s asleep?”

Wes’s eyes were deep with thought. Meredith couldn’t read his expression; it was full of an emotion she couldn’t identify.

“Honestly, sweetheart, I’m pretty tired. It’s just as well for me to get a good night’s sleep tonight, without you trying to seduce and harass me all night long,” he said, and grinned. “I’m going to stop by the office after tennis tomorrow and work for a few hours. I’ll meet you and your brother for dinner, and we can pick up then.”

Meredith frowned. “Are you okay, Wes?”

“I’m great,” he said, and kissed her. “One night apart doesn’t indicate a problem—that is, unless you think you can’t handle being away from me for that long.”

Meredith smiled. “Well, I really don’t want to be away from you, but I guess I understand.” She lifted her chin toward him and kissed him, lingering for several moments and relishing the feel of his hands as they caressed her shoulders and back. “I’ll miss you, though,” she said, her head tilted coyly. “I’ll be thinking about you.”

Wes looked both intrigued and amused. “Well, absence makes the heart grow fonder, sweetheart. Go ahead and miss me for a night or two,” he told her, rubbing her backside. “Then I’ll let you beg me for it later.”

Blogiversary | Meredith Out of Darkness by Amanda Gale – Excerpt

EXCERPT | MEREDITH OUT OF DARKNESS

10344842_460430044103828_7156636535076939955_nTITLE: Meredith Out of Darkness (The Meredith Series Book One)

PUBLISHER: Brenda & Cobena Books

PUBLICATION DATE: July 3, 2014

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romance

Nick and Meredith stood there looking at each other.

“What is it?” she asked, growing uncomfortable in his intense gaze.

“Nothing,” he said.

She glanced around the house nervously. “Well, it’s too early for dinner.”

“Let’s go for a walk.”

She stared at him. “In the snow?”

He shrugged. “Why not?”

She couldn’t think of a reason.

They put their winter things back on and went outside. At the bottom of the steps, he looked at her expectantly.

She pointed toward the left. “Let’s go this way,” she said. There was a walking park with a little playground a few streets down.

They walked in silence for a minute, the only sound that of the snow crunching under their boots. Across the street, two children were pulling each other in a sled. A bird flew by. Meredith wondered how he had missed the message that it was time to fly south.

“So,” she began, trying to make conversation, “how do you think you’ll like the job here?”

Nick considered. “It’s pretty much the same job I do everywhere. I’m largely left alone. I have lots of time to think. I’m good at it.” He shrugged. “I’m sure I’ll like it well enough.”

They continued walking along in silence.

“And you?” he said after some time, turning to her. He smiled pleasantly. Her heart lurched as his eyes met hers. “I gather you’re a teacher. A very noble profession.”

Meredith laughed. “Thank you,” she said. “I like my job. I enjoy being in front of the classroom talking about books I love. Plus, seeing the improvement in my students’ writing is very rewarding. It makes me feel like I’m making a contribution somehow.”

“You are.”

She turned to him and smiled. “Thanks.”

He took her hand. They walked in silence for another minute, then turned down a street toward the park. Meredith shivered in the cold, and Nick put his arm around her shoulder. Taking a chance, she wrapped hers around his waist, and they pulled each other close. Melting, she lay her head on the side of his chest. He kissed the top of her head.

They walked like this for a couple of blocks until they reached the park. Here the snow looked like a shimmery blanket, for no one had ventured to come here since the snow had begun falling. They entered the park and walked along the trail for several minutes, still holding each other in silence.

“Are you originally from Maine?” she asked.

“No, I was born in Vermont. I grew up there.”

“What brought you to Maine?”

Nick said nothing for a moment. “I guess I just like the memories I have there. My father used to take me fishing there. I still like to fish whenever I can.”

Meredith was delighted by this response. “Does your father still live in Vermont?”

“Yes.” They took a few more steps before he spoke again. “He lives in an assisted living there.”

Meredith turned toward him; he was watching the ground as he walked.

“Is he ill?” she asked, her voice soft with hesitation.

“He had a stroke a number of years ago.”

Meredith felt a deep ache in her chest. “I’m sorry.”

She listened to the steady sound of their footsteps in the snow as she waited for him to respond.

“He’s also been fighting depression. He has a lot of regrets about his life.”

“What kind of regrets?”

“Regrets about leaving my mother,” he answered, but then said no more.

They walked on in silence. Worried that she was prying, Meredith decided not to ask any more questions. She was surprised when he continued.

“He went back to her right around the time she got sick, and they were together until she died. I wanted to move home to take care of him after his stroke, but he wouldn’t hear of it. So I stayed in Maine.” He furrowed his brow with thought. “I don’t see him as often as I’d like. But at least I get to live somewhere that reminds me of happy times.”

Meredith felt a sudden rush of an emotion she couldn’t identify. She didn’t know what to say next. She directed her eyes downward toward the snow.

“It snowed a lot last night,” she said. “I imagine even more so in Maine.”

“It’s one of the things I love most about Maine,” Nick said, and instantly his face brightened. “Some people complain about the winters, but I never mind them. There’s nothing as beautiful as the rocky shoreline when it’s covered in snow. I don’t know what looks whiter, the snow or the waves.”

Meredith watched him as he spoke. The simplicity of this comment warmed her, and she couldn’t help but smile.

“My town always has winter walks and wildlife watches,” he went on. “Some nights people gather to stargaze. The stars always seem brighter during winter.”

“It sounds like a very peaceful place,” she said, and paused to imagine this. She faced forward once more. “I like the winter, too. I love being snowed in, just sitting in front of the fire with a good book and a cup of tea.”

“That’s the best thing about winter.”

They continued walking, the snow heavy under their feet.

Finally he withdrew his arm and bent down to the ground to scoop up some snow with his gloved hand. Continuing to walk, he patted it into a ball. “I wonder where Vince went,” he said.

Meredith snickered. “I think I can guess.”

Nick did not respond. He was packing his snowball tightly.

Meredith said, “Does he cavort like this with women in Maine?”

Nick’s mouth contorted into a crooked grin. “You could say that.”

“My darling brother,” Meredith said pleasantly. “A new girl every week. That’s how he’s always been.”

They continued walking, Nick moving the snowball from hand to hand. Meredith said tentatively, with her heart in her throat, “What about you? I’m sure women fall all over you.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Well, look at you.” Without looking at him herself, she said, trying to assume a lighthearted, joking tone, “You can’t tell me you don’t know what women see when they look at you.”

“What do you see?”

The question caught her off guard. After a brief moment of thought, she said, “I see a man whose quiet voice seems to reflect the quietude of his soul.”

He chuckled once, silently. “That’s poetry. You must be a writer, too.”

Neither of them spoke. Then she said, “So? Do they?”

“Does who what?”

“Do women knock down your door.” And do you answer, she thought but did not say.

He said nothing for a moment, then said flatly, looking at the snowball in his hand, “I’ve had one or two women.”

Meredith didn’t know how to interpret this comment, but she let it lie. She didn’t really want to talk about past relationships, neither his nor hers.

Abruptly his face grew mischievous, his eyes narrowing and his lips curving into a subtle grin. “Hey,” he said, affecting a serious tone. “What’s that up there?”

“What?” she asked, looking straight ahead.

Suddenly she felt cold snow in her face. It fell down into her scarf, chilling her neck and chin. She stared at him, shocked and aghast. He was attempting to keep his face expressionless but was failing miserably. He opened his eyes wide with pretend surprise.

“I’m sorry,” he said innocently. “My hand slipped.”

“Oh, it did, did it?” she said, simultaneously irritated and delighted. She bent over and grabbed some snow.

Before she could straighten, he tackled her, falling with her into the snow so she fell on her side. He kneeled next to her.

“I’m sorry,” he said again. “I don’t know what came over me.”

Leaning on her arm to sit up, she said, “I’ll tell you what’s coming over you.” With that, she pushed him into the snowy ground and lay on top of him. They stared at each other, neither knowing what to do next. Suddenly he kissed her. Meredith kissed him back, her pulse racing. She brought her hands to his face and tilted her chin; his hands drifted to her back, and he sighed softly. She pulled away, rubbing his cold nose with hers.

Breathless, they didn’t say anything for a few moments. Then he said, “You know, it’s cold here in the snow.”

“I’m sure it is,” she said, and stood. She held out her hand. “Let’s go back home and warm up.”

Blogiversary | Amanda Gale Bio & Giveaway

I’m happy to introduce my final featured author, Amanda Gale.  I absolutely loved working with Amanda throughout this whole process and am happy to support her writing.  I’ve read the first two books of the Meredith Series and love both of them.  I can’t wait to read the next two!

Today, I want to share the descriptions of each book in The Meredith Series.

10344842_460430044103828_7156636535076939955_nTITLE: Meredith Out of Darkness (The Meredith Series Book One)

PUBLISHER: Brenda & Cobena Books

PUBLICATION DATE: July 3, 2014

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romance

“Meredith Beck is living the perfect life. She has a thriving career she loves and an apartment in New York City with the man of her dreams. But when she is devastated by tragedy, Meredith must rebuild her life in what she discovers is a shockingly less-than-perfect world.

In Book One, Meredith Out of the Darkness, Meredith stumbles through her day-to-day responsibilities without passion or hope. Her mundane routine is pleasantly interrupted when her brother introduces her to Nick Kelly, a quiet painter from a small town in Maine. Meredith is drawn to Nick’s love of nature and is comforted by his purity of heart. They begin a whirlwind romance, and as they plan their future together, she is delighted to have found peace once again, this time in a simple life far removed from the fast-paced life she’s known. But they are haunted by the past, competing with ghosts and desperate to meet unreachable expectations.

Full of colorful characters and leading the reader on an emotional journey from Philadelphia to Maine, Meredith Out of the Darkness is about two people’s awakening to a world of possibilities. But when their different visions of perfection come between them, the question remains: what is true perfection?”

PUBLISHER: Brenda & Cobena Books

PUBLICATION DATE: July 3, 2014

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romance

“In Meredith Out of the Darkness, Nick showed her the beauty of a simple life in which all her choices were her own. In Book Two, Meredith Against the Wind, Meredith bravely moves forward in her quest for perfection, only her vision of perfection has been forever changed.

In a Washington, DC suburb of Virginia, Meredith meets Wes Bickhart, a charismatic attorney recovering from a divorce. Wes sweeps her off her feet with his wit, charm, and chivalry, and together they enjoy a passion for intellectual banter and for each other. Meredith feels safe with Wes, who having been burned himself, is also seeking the perfect love and wants nothing more than to give her a future of comfort and security. She is tempted by the seemingly perfect life Wes offers her. But in the back of her mind, she wonders if this is what she wants anymore. And the longer she takes to decide, the more she realizes that this life might require her to sacrifice more of herself than she is willing.

In Meredith Against the Wind, Meredith is put to the test as she is forced to stand up for herself, even as she redefines who she really is. Harder now but stronger, with new perspective and strength, she becomes embroiled in a power struggle as she determines how much is worth surrendering for love.”

“Ever optimistic, Meredith has never given up hope that she’d recapture perfection. However, experience has taught her how easily her world can fall apart. Having endured enough losses, in Book Three, Meredith Into the Fire, she resolves that it will never happen again.

They’ve been crossing paths for over a year. Now fate seems to throw Meredith together with Shane Thayer, an aspiring celebrity chef with an odd sense of humor and a volatile temper. Struggling to make a name for himself and to satisfy the ambitions of his overbearing parents, Shane seems a far cry from the security for which Meredith yearns. But she is tired of following the same path, and she is anxious for her search to be over. Against the advice of her friends and family, to whom it is obvious that Shane is all wrong for her, Meredith sprints toward what she convinces herself is stability. Unfortunately, her attempt to take control of her life only brings her more chaos.

With tension at her job mounting and her unstable relationship rushing toward an unknown conclusion, Meredith makes a desperate grasp for control as her life crumbles around her. As her journey culminates in a dramatic explosion, will she settle for Shane or will she find what she is truly looking for?”

PUBLISHER: Brenda & Cobena Books

PUBLICATION DATE: July 3, 2014

GENRE: Women’s Fiction, Romance

“Meredith’s journey has brought her far from the buoyant, idealistic girl she was before. But she has grown wiser and more courageous with each experience, never losing her integrity, her kindness, or her spark for life. In Book Four, Meredith With the Waves, she comes to be at peace with the world and with herself as she and her husband begin their life together. Their relationship will blossom and mature as they face trials and share laughter, together finding that life’s imperfections are what make perfection after all.

In this poetic final installment of the Meredith series, Meredith learns of intense love, intense sacrifice, intense sadness, and intense joy. It is a story of birth and death, life and family, and the ways they teach us what is truly important. A poignant tale of reconciliation and the putting to rest of personal demons, it is a truly satisfying conclusion.”

Blogiversary | Edward Mooney Bio & Giveaway

This week I’m featuring a very dear teacher I had in high school, Edward Mooney.  I learned so much from him and am honored to feature him on my blog.

UnknownTITLE: The Pearls of the Stone Man

PUBLISHER: Sourcebooks, Inc.

PUBLICATION DATE: April 3, 2001

GENRE: Fiction

“A Promise made.
A Love that will Last Forever.

If you’ve ever loved someone to the depth of your being, someone who for one reason or other needed to move on, you know the power of a parting wish.

The story of Joseph and Anne, his wife of fifty-three years, is the story of just such a wish-one that only true love could try to achieve. And for Joseph the strength to build the stone wall-a special reminder from Anne’s childhood-will take him places he never expected and that you will never forget.

The Pearls of the Stone Man takes us beyond generations and our own stone walls to the very humanity that unites us all-and shows us the incredible power of one couple’s love to last beyond parting and forever change the lives of those they touched.”

book 2TITLE: The Journey of the Stone Man

PUBLISHER: Champion Press, Inc.

PUBLICATION DATE: October 1, 2004

GENRE: Fiction

“The long awaited “prequel” to The Pearls of the Stone Man is here. In his touching new novel, Edward Mooney, Jr. continues the story of his main character, Joseph Marino, that so captivated his readers in 2002. Mooney’s first novel took the reader on an incredible journey through the last months of Joseph and his wife Anne’s marriage — addressing the fateful events that took place at the ending of their lives together on Pine Mountain.

Part of a trilogy, Mooney’s second novel, The Journey of the Stone Man, transports the reader to a time and place in the middle of Joseph’s life. Back tracking to a setting 25 years prior to that of his first novel, we are introduced to the middle of Joseph Marino’s life — along with the age old struggle between father and son trying to understand each other. Using the setting of a cross-country road trip, The Journey of the Stone Man spins a tale of a father (Joseph) and his teenage son (Paul) while traveling the country in a “Woody” station wagon. Mooney’s sensitive writing and attention to detail reveal timeless-family dynamics pertinent to all families.”

Blogiversary | Farzana Marie Bio & Giveaway

Today, my featured author is Farzana Marie.  She is another fellow member of the Women’s National Book Association – Los Angeles Chapter.  I’m excited to be mixing it up a bit by featuring a poet.  You can pre-order her collection of poems below.

untitledTITLE: Load Poems Like Guns

PUBLISHER: Holy Cow Press

RELEASE DATE: April 7, 2015

GENRE: Poetry

“Load Poems Like Guns is an important book. It gives an eloquent and wrenching witness to voices from another place and another poetry: voices with a unique mix of formal power and personal pain. Eight Afghan women poets are eloquently translated here by Farzana Marie, including the tragic and luminously gifted Nadia Anjuman. This is a bilingual edition; the English and Dari are side by side, allowing us a glimpse of the mysterious and profound Persian poetic tradition. This is a book every poet and every reader of poetry should seek out. It amplifies our understanding. It broadens our sense of the identity of the poet. Above all, it makes available a rich and troubling narrative we need to hear.”–Eavan Boland, author of A Woman Without A Country (poems)
